Lesson 2 of 30

Making the decision

The fact that you can start a business does not mean you should start it today. A better decision comes from evaluating five readiness domains rather than from enthusiasm alone.

None of these domains disqualifies you permanently. A gap is a task with a date on it, not a verdict. What matters is knowing which gaps exist before customers, specimens and money are depending on you.

The five readiness domains

Work through each one honestly. The questions are deliberately uncomfortable — they are the ones a lab, a practice or a patient will effectively be asking of you.

01

Clinical readiness

  • Can you competently perform the services you plan to offer?
  • Do you know when a collection is outside your competence?
  • Can you follow identification, labeling and specimen requirements?
02

Operational readiness

  • How will orders reach you?
  • How will you confirm receiving-lab requirements?
  • How will scheduling, payment, privacy and specimen delivery work?
  • What happens if the draw fails or a specimen is rejected?
03

Financial readiness

  • Do you know startup and per-appointment costs?
  • Can you support inconsistent early demand?
  • Have you included travel and admin time?
  • Is your payment and cancellation policy clear?
04

Customer-acquisition readiness

  • Can you name your first target segment?
  • Can you build a real prospect list?
  • Do you know the problem you solve?
  • Are you willing to sell and follow up?
05

Personal readiness

  • Are you willing to work in variable home and community environments?
  • Can you tolerate inconsistent early volume?
  • Do you want to operate a business, not only perform draws?

Red flags

Any of these on their own is a reason to delay rather than push ahead.

  • Clinical confidence is not adequate for planned services
  • No receiving-lab workflow
  • No insurance plan
  • Pricing was copied from someone else
  • You require immediate full-time income
  • You expect customers to appear without outreach

Where XpediPro fits

Software cannot make an unready business ready. XpediPro works best when the operator already understands the customer, the service, the pricing and the workflow being organized — then it handles the booking, scheduling, payments, documents and communication around all of it.

FAQs

What score means I am ready?

The scorecard is a planning tool, not a license or certification. A high score means fewer obvious gaps, not a guarantee of demand.

Should I quit my job before starting?

There is no universal answer. A controlled side launch may reduce financial pressure while you test demand.
