Lesson 09

Insurance for a Mobile Phlebotomy Business

For owners evaluating business insurance needs. An LLC does not replace insurance — a mobile service faces patient-injury, property, driving, privacy, employee and contractual risk at the same time.

Lesson 9 of 30

Before you begin

This lesson explains the general framework. Verify the rules and requirements that apply to your state, employer, laboratory, payer, insurance arrangement and service model.

The coverage areas

An LLC organizes ownership; insurance transfers risk. A professional mobile service touches several categories of exposure at once, and one policy rarely reaches all of them.

Professional liabilityMay address claims tied to professional services. Scope, exclusions and limits vary by policy.
General liabilityMay address certain bodily-injury or property-damage claims that are not covered as professional liability.
AutomobilePersonal auto policies may not fully address business-use risk. Describe your actual driving and use to the carrier.
Cyber and privacyRelevant when the business handles sensitive patient information or would face breach-response costs.
Workers' compensationRequirements vary by state, employee count and structure.
Contract requirementsPhysician, lab, facility or research contracts may require specific limits, additional insureds or certificates.

Talking to a broker

Describe the real work: home visits, specimen collection, transport, employees or contractors, geography and how you handle data. A quote built on a partial description is a quote for a business you are not running.

Compare limits and exclusions rather than premiums. The cheapest policy is the one most likely to exclude the thing that eventually happens.

Common mistakes

The second one is worth particular attention: a declined claim after an accident on the way to a draw is a business-ending event.

  • Shopping only by premium
  • Failing to disclose business use of a vehicle
  • Assuming general liability covers professional errors
  • Ignoring cyber and privacy risk
  • Letting certificates expire

Where XpediPro fits

FAQs

How much coverage do I need?

There is no safe universal number. Contract requirements, state law, the services you provide and your risk profile all move the answer.

Can I use only general liability?

Do not assume one policy covers professional, auto, cyber and employee risks. Review the combination with a qualified broker who has heard an accurate description of the work.
