Lesson 29

Technician Onboarding & Training

For owners training and onboarding technicians. Hiring is only the beginning — a technician who receives a schedule and a supply bag has not been onboarded.

Lesson 29 of 30

Before the first patient

A technician who receives a schedule and a supply bag has not been onboarded. Credential and employment documentation, privacy and safety training, SOP review, technology setup, service-area orientation and the incident escalation process all come first.

Teach the whole workflow

Not just the draw — the eleven stages either side of it:

  • Request
  • Review
  • Assignment
  • Confirmation
  • Preparation
  • Arrival
  • Collection
  • Labeling
  • Transport
  • Delivery
  • Closeout
01

Technology training

How to receive assignments, locate documents, update status, communicate and document completion. A technician who cannot update status will be phoning you instead.

02

Observed competency

Where appropriate: observe, perform under supervision, demonstrate competence, then take independent assignments. Attendance at an orientation is not competency.

03

Scenario training

Patient unavailable, incomplete order, failed collection, specimen leak, needlestick, unsafe home, delayed lab drop-off and payment questions. Practise the hard days before they arrive.

04

First 30-day review

Punctuality, documentation, specimen quality, communication, patient feedback, SOP compliance and technology use. Early enough to correct, late enough to have data.

05

Continuing competency

Use incidents, SOP updates, new services and laboratory changes as training triggers rather than waiting for an annual date.

Common mistakes

The second is the most common: the draw is the part the technician already knows.

  • Assuming orientation attendance equals competency
  • Training only on venipuncture
  • No scenario practice
  • No 30-day feedback
  • No retraining after repeated issues

Technician onboarding checklist

Use the same path for every technician, and document competency before independent assignments.

Where XpediPro fits

Training teaches the standard. A consistent digital workflow reinforces it during day-to-day operations, so the technician is prompted by the system rather than recalling a document they read in week one.

FAQs

How long should onboarding take?

Long enough to verify the technician can safely and reliably perform the actual role. That varies with experience and service complexity — a fixed number of days is a scheduling convenience, not a standard.
